"We're ready to give help - that's what Britain does." So says International Development Secretary Hilary Benn on the recent earthquake in Java.
But what about giving help to the many hospitals which are cutting staff, cancelling operations, closing wards and departments and denying important drugs to cancer sufferers because of lack of funds? If money is instantly available to send to far corners of the world at the drop of a hat, then why isn't it available for our health service here in Britain?
If housing is instantly available for asylum seekers, then why can't this same housing be provided for the many British people who have no roof over their head?
